CS ORIZABA Built in 1883 by Harlan and Hillingsworth, Wilmington Length 205 ft. Breadth 34 ft. Depth 16.1 ft. Gross tonnage 967 Named Willamette Valley on launch, renamed Kate Caroll and finally Orizaba. Chartered from the Pacific Coast Steamship Company by the US Army to lay the following cables. Equipped with a paying out machine sited on the forward well deck, two cable tanks, one forward 24 ft. dia by 8 ft. deep which held the St. Michael - Cape Nome cable and one aft 20 ft. dia by 6 ft. deep in which the Unalakik - St. Michael cable was coiled.
