Introduction

This page concerns John Seymour's 1875 voyage, as first mate of the SS Hibernia, to Sydney, Australia (etc), to lay a submarine telegraph cable.

The route was La Perouse, Sydney, Australia, to Wakapauka, New Zealand. The 1283 nm cable was made and laid by Telcon for the Eastern Extension Australia & China Telegraph Co. using cable ships Hibernia and Edinburgh.

HMS Challenger surveyed the route. TheSydney end of cable was diverted into Bondi Beach in 1917. The cable was withdrawn from service in 1932.
